Learning to play a guitar is an excellent decision. Whether you want to self-teach or take lessons, you can do a ton with the guitar. Use the following advice to get started.

Spend time on the fundamentals. Do not try to learn too much too quickly. You may need to learn music you like to listen to, but you should make it a point to build a solid foundation. Figure out what finger positions are. Make it a point to practice scales and chords. You need to own these prior to taking the next step with anything else.

Remember, learning the guitar is not an overnight thing. Take everything step-by-step, and you will master the guitar. Practice at a regular time daily so that you can really get to know your guitar and play it well.

Figure out how you can be more motivated. Set short-term goals and long-term dreams for learning to play the guitar. Find someone else who is interested in learning, and the two of you can practice together. Give yourself a reward when you hit your goals. Anything worth doing, is worth doing well.

Make sure to learn the different types of musical notation. Understanding musical theory will help make sure you know how scales and the different chords work. Memorize the note name for each string, and also which note belongs to each fret. You will find this knowledge serves you well as you play riffs and melody.

Your fingertips should build calluses when you learn how to play guitar. Calluses will make playing the guitar less painful, especially with more practice. You will build them up over time. There are even products you can purchase to help build calluses.

Before you get calluses on your fingers they will get sore. You will find it to be less painful if you use nylon strings or an electric guitar. The type of guitar that is most painful for beginners is a steel-string acoustic one. You might feel better when you soak fingers in alcohol, but stay away from toxic substances such as turpentine.

Don’t skip practices. Just about anything worth learning requires hard work. You should aim to get in at least 30 minutes of practice most days of the week.

Purchase a metronome. You can get into a rhythm when you utilize a metronome, and it can assist you with timing. With a metronome, you won’t have to waste time worrying over whether you have the right tempo. You can learn the song at slower speeds and pick up the pace when you’re ready. Use this tool when learning songs and watch your playing get better.

Are you ready to continue on with this journey? Just imagine all the instruments you can play! You are ready to get started rocking out, strumming a great country tune or writing something original. Use the things you’ve gone over here and you’ll start to appreciate how good guitars are at making music.
